Can I share my dream?

Dreams and aspirations – they swirl around in all of us. When I was young I dreamed of having my own business. I wanted to do something bigger than myself. I didn’t just want to work in a “nice little job” like my mom suggested. You see, my mother was the daughter of immigrants who barely spoke English when their families came through Ellis Island. Their marriage was arranged. My grandmother spent her days making homemade pasta and cleaning the house. My mother followed in her footsteps. My sister was content to do the same. Where in the world did this independent minded youngest child come from? As much as I love my mother, she did her best to keep me under wraps.

But the yearning for independence just keeps tugging at my heart.

I’ve stumbled around for a lifetime figuring out what to do with myself. But, several years ago I was asked to design a chocolate and a culinary line for a farm in Washington State. One thing led to another and a small (very small) business was born. It’s still very small. I was taught not to be too big for my britches. But, by gosh, I make really really good chocolate. My passion fruit truffles have even traveled to Singapore. I’ve been offered money for my recipe.

So, here’s my dream. Create an online store for a small and select offering of really really good chocolates. That won’t be hard to do, I’ve already built a very nice core group of happy consumers. But the lofty part of the plan is to design and secure commercial kitchens to help others realize their dreams of having a small (or not so small) food product manufacturing operation of their own. There are so many talented and passionate people who dream of bringing their product to market. It’s a hugely competitive business. But there’s strength in numbers and maybe, just maybe, I’ve got what it takes to help others get the wheels of commerce moving.

Thanks for listening!

    • WOW!  That is a wonderful dream.

So, let’s talk about getting some of those chocolates here to my departments and for me to taste to incorporate into my corporate gifts as well as with my wine classes.

Call me at 202–302-3213 and let’s talk.  The sooner the better.

    • Wow! What a great dream!! I went to school for pastry, but never got a chance to work in the field since I was pregnant with my first son.. I LOVE to bake, LOVE chocolate, and always wanted to bake for others.. I have won  ribbons two years in a row from the “Art of Chocolate” for my brownies & cookies.. I truly understand how you feel.. My heart always goes back to baking & pastry.. Hopefully someday I will have the courage to go out and get started… Thanks!

    • My great-grandparents came to the United States through Ellis Island also. They both came here from Holland but not together. They found each other in the states. I went to Ellis Island 9 years ago and found my great-grandfather’s family name (also my maiden name) on the wall…Van Bolhuis. It was pretty awesome seeing it there. Have you been there? (sorry, I’m side-tracking a bit!)
