Governor Schwarzenegger signed the bill Wednesday and as of Jan 2009- no more texting while driving!
Well, no texting while driving? Not that I haven’t been guilty of it too, but don’t you think it’s a little dangerous?
I defintely think it is dangerous and it should be illegal but how will cops distinguish if we are texting or dialing a phone number? Just a thought, I wouldn’t want to be pulled over for dialing!
I’m in support of that, you can get into a lot of trouble texting, that should of been the first law to pass.
I guess the only way to distinguish is to pull the person over and look at the phone! I think that’s a little extreme, but I see way too many horrible drivers every day, whether they‘re talking, texting, or just plain old bad drivers. I’d rather be safe than sorry.
I am one of those prissies that has always refused to use the phone while I drive and I have no idea how to text, so this law is fine with me. better safe than sorry
Even though it says no texting, I am sure it extends to dialing. Most phones have voice recognition so you can just hit a button on the side without looking, and say the name to dial.
Well, if they ban napping while driving, then I’m gonna be in really big trouble…
I think that it is sad that we have to have legislation to make us do the right thing. It is common sense that it is dangerous to key in a phone number or key in a message to someone while driving. Use voice activation to call or pull over. I saw a person going down my street the other day on a motorscooter…street legal type and he was texting. He looked up every other second or so but still…..why can’t people use common sense? The last thing we need is more government telling us what is right or wrong.
Keep on texting .. tho i would prefer they didnt
these people give me job security as an emergency medical provider.
Oh, and Miss Daisy, just out of curiosity, are you even CLOSE to 40? Just asking.
Yes, this law has already passed in Arizona! I’m glad (not that I could even text without driving)...but near our house not too long ago a girl ran head-on into a dump truck while texting…going about 65 miles an hour…yeah…bad
So, I guess we do need laws against it…I think talking on the phone should be banned too! People are nuts when they are driving and talking. When my son first got his learner’s permit, we were side-swiped by a guy who ran a red light while he was talking on his cell phone! If we had been in the intersection any sooner…my side of the vehicle would have been toast! Luckily it was the truck that got totaled not me…
Some people just can’t multi-task!
I JUST DON‘T GET IT. WHY WOULD SOMEONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WANT TO BE TEXTING WHILE DRIVING? THAT IS SO DANGEROUS AND IT ONLY TAKE A SPLIT SECOND FOR AN ACCIDENT TO HAPPEN. PLEASE NO TEXTING…
Okay; When I return to this blog I will post the newspaper article that a sixteen year old driver said she will never be the same for killing four people on I-5 in CA. While attempting to text and dail on her cell phone. It took allof 3 seconds of her distraction to kill 4 PEOPLE !
So now who here said : They would keep texting? or dail a cellphone while driving?
Why in the WORLD we even started driving around with these distractions in the CAR ! Is it enough for you to drive and watch put for the other drivers that possibly haven’t since 16 performed a drivers exam and road test and forbid we got children talking in the car and the radio, then you want to have a conversation while driving as if that’s multi tasking?
I would if voted into as a CA Senator – Out law all cell phones in all vehicles if you are a single driver, only the passenger could operate such a device, and communicate upon it safely.
By the way as a ex- EMT paramedic ; I picked up my share of DEAD, WOUNDED FATAL drivers from cell phone usage and that young lady is never the same and I had to rescue her.
Even as an EMT, we do not as the driver communicate with dispatch and drive.
Next BILL IN CA for a LAW is
NO CELL PHONES in any Vehicles if you are a single driver.
We did not need them 10 years ago, so why we NEED them now.
PULL OVER USE THE PHONE and PUT IT AWAY.
My comrades EMT’s do not want to pick you or your baby up because the driver is ignorant and vain.
CELLPHONES ARE A DISTRACTION.
LAST WEEK JUST BECAUSE A BEE FLEW IN THE WINDOW A WOMAN SMASHED INTO A GUARD RAIL AND FATALLY KILLED HER CHILD. SO WHAT WOULD A HEATED CONVERSATION DO TO YOU IF YOU ARE IN TRAFFIC AND 100 OTHER PERSONS ARE DOING THAT CHATTING AND TEXTING AND TALKING AND SPEAKER PHONE WILL YOU SEE SHE JUST GOT FLAT TIRE AND TRIED TO WARN YOU WITH HER LIGHTS AND PULL OVER IS YOUR REACTION TIME THAT FAST? REMEMBER YOU ARE TALKING ON YOUR CELL PHONE….
Another thing that happens when people are on their cell phones is they tend to lose their senses. They start driving way to slow on the freeway no less. It drives me crazy. I tell my kids all the time to please be mindful that there are other people out on the roads also…
Here in Houston,(Friendswood) if you are caught talking on your cell phone you will be ticketed and your phone taken away…(YAY) they need to do that everywhere….
I was driving down the road the other day and saw a young girl (probably 18) driving next to me and she was texting the entire time she was driving. It didn’t inspire a lot of faith in me that anyone around her would be safe so I made sure to get away from her as fast as possible.
I hate talking on the phone in the car so I always end my calls as soon as I say hello or I don’t pick up until I am parked (figuring the person can wait a few minutes until it’s safe for me to speak with them). I can’t tell you how distracted most people who are on phones appear to be when driving because my husband is one of those people.
I think texting is way more dangerous, though, than actually speaking on a cell phone.
Yes, Keep the focus alive.
Focus on driving not texting and talking; I threw away my ear piece today; It’s too much of an expected demand that I would drive and talk.
