I can’t believe it!  25 pounds in only three years.  I am 44 years old.  I am 5’ 2” tall and was quite comfortable at 126 pounds and ate what I wanted.  Over the past three years this weight has piled on and now I just realized when I was at the doctor that I feel like a fat slob!  Okay, I have a thyroid problem and that may be part of it, but I can’t blame it all on that.  I think it is age and also I take anti-depressants which I have heard add a little weight.  So, I am fighting an uphill battle.  I need some motivation to at least lose ten pounds.  On my small frame, I know that would make a difference.

Any ideas of excercises I can do at home?  I am living in Dubai now and don’t have a car.  I am not working so I don’t have access to a gym.  We do have a pool.  How much swimming will make a difference?  Also, I was thinking of buying a punching bag.  If I punch the heck out of it, will that burn calories?

        • Don’t worry! This problem can be fixed easily… first of all don’t think its all you. Your thyroid does contribute to weight gain.

In my personal experience when I really want to lose weight, i begin with food. Although you may think you don’t eat a lot, you may be eating a lot!

I would cut out all carbs (i dont mean in fruits, veg’s, etc.) I mean bread, rices, pasta, etc… get all the heavy foods out of there and you will start dropping weight asap!

you can still eat a burger with lettuce tomatoes, etc-with no bread. Who wants to feel heavy after a meal anyways?

I would buy a punching bag if you can. That will not only make you lose weight (if you use it that is lol){ but tone up your arms !

Last tip- cardio cardio cardio- makes your fat disappear!!

Good luck , you can do it!

Every time you want to eat bad or not work out- just think about that body you want to get!!

        • I agree with Stephanie’s comments. However, I would ad getting a step counter so you can work toward walking a minimum of 10,000 steps a day. Start with a goal of 3,000 and up it 500 steps a day. That will help more than you can imagine.

I’d also consider exercise bands for strength training. They are reasonable and don’t take up much room.

        • Two things made a huge difference for me.

Cutting out the carbs. I would eat a “healthy” meal of pasta and salad with low fat dressing, and then two hours later I’d be ripping the fridge door off its hinges. I realized it was carbs that was making me so hungry. So now I have a dinner of meat and salad with full fat dressing, and I’m happy for hours.

I do the Egoscue Method. It’s floor exercises and takes about half an hour for the quick version. But it’s fabulous for shaping, and you can watch TV while you‘re doing it!

        • I hate diets and I need a lot of food, so this is what works for me …
Eat clean unrefined carbs – always with protein. Protein slows the absorption of carbs, which ensures you are fuller, longer and will help keep your blood sugar even. Try to eat 5–6 times  per day. Work on your body an hour a day. I alternate weight training or cardio each day. Of course I don’t make it to the gym every day, but I try to.
Yes, I eat treats, but for the most part, I follow a clean diet, eating decent volumes of non-refined carbs and lean protein.
You will not be hungry, don’t need to follow any “plan” and you will feel great. This is a lifestyle not a diet.

        • At home video DVD is a great idea. I know a woman who is nearly 60; absolutely adorable with the cutest figure. She’s a board member at my husband’s school and I finally got up the nerve to ask her how she stays in such great shape. She’s been doing the Firm videos at home for 20 years. I’m sure genetics play a part in her cute figure but she swears by the exercise. And, I’ve been to dinners with her – she eats everything on her plate, even dessert but only a portion of each item and leaves the rest.

        • I tried weight watchers.  Didn’t do well with having to prepare all my food for the day and take it with me or having to count (points…whatever) calories.  I also didn’t like feeling like a loser when I ‘cheated‘.
That’s why I love nutritional cleansing.  It is soooo easy and it fits with my busy lifestyle.  There is also no such thing a cheating…so no feelings of guilt!

Do something physical everyday; so I have been working on getting myself moving walking, cycling, gardening aerobics etc.; I also start lunch and dinner with a Big Salad with Fat-free dressing; then I wait 10 minutes before I eat my meal and I find that I am very satisfied with smaller portions and heathy choices for the meal.  No need for snacks in between.  oh yeah lots and lots of H2O.

        • Have you thought about using a cellular cleanse.  To rid your body of the toxins.  It really works.  I lost 20 pounds in two months.  I’m in my third month on my own and have not gained any back.  The secret is not going back to your old habits.  I used Isogenix.  I think that’s the spelling.  Good luck!

        • I’m excited to see this post. I had two knee surgeries in the past 9 months and I’ve never had trouble keeping my weight in check because I’ve always been so active.

I went for my physical last week and I’ve gained 15 lbs. I was on a lot of medications after both surgeries and I was so immobile that it didn’t matter if I was eating or not, I became “dead weight“.

I have a knee replacement coming up this fall (Oh yay!) which should get me moving better than the slow walk I do now…I fear that I’ll gain more in the weeks post surgery.

Slower metabolism, peri-menopause and one grumpy leg added to weight gain is not great! Thanks for posting this and the advice is so well taken!

        • DailyBlonde,

I was introduced to Isagenix when I too was undergoing major surgery.  It helped me cleanse my body of the effects of the painkillers as well as helped me lose weight.  I had such an amazing result that I continued with the program and am continuing to lose weight.

When you health is not…‘cooperating’ it can be a real challenge to keep at a healthy weight.  This program makes it so easy.

Here’s to a quick recovery from that knee surgery!!

        • Many good suggestions already listed for you.  The one thing I don't see is the importance of keeping a food journal.  Write down everything you eat and how much of it.  This could be a real eye-opener to you.

One thing that has worked for me is to eat until I’m no longer hungry.  If you eat until you‘re full, you’ve eaten too much.  It takes about 20 minutes for your body to register that you‘re full, so if you stop eating when you‘re no longer hungry, you’ll actually be full.  :)

        • Well, looks like the women on this site have realized that once you hit 40, it feels like you body goes into total meltdown! My sister is 10 years older than I am and she tried to warn me. You never listen to the ones closest to  you!
I am going to try to tell you the short version of what happened in my family to wake us up to eating right and taking care of our bodies.  The first wake up call was my husband. He got extremely sick over spring break this year. In and out of the hospital 3 or 4 times. Never figured out what it was. I have 6 kids (yes, gave birth to) from 2 to 21. NOTHING worked, I cut out carbs, I drank a gallon of water a day, I did the protein diet, I worked out 5 days a week. Nothing worked. It was very frustrating and rather depressing. A very good friend of mine was on an all natural product and was dropping weight like it was water running off of her back. It was driving me crazy. I tried it…and guess what….I lost 5 lbs the first week and then…NOTHING. I went to my chiropractor because I was having some pretty bad constant headaches. He told me my hormones were bouncing around like a pinball machine,  and told me to take a supplement call Symplex F. After a couple of days, the headache started easing off, after a couple of weeks, I started feeling “normal” again and after a month I felt almost human! Then he told me about the same natural product my friend had had so much success with. I told him I had tried it and it had very little luck. He urged me to try it again but to add 2 other products from the same company. One was a multi-vitamin, the other a multi-mineral and the 3rd, the one my friend was taking, was a thermogenic modulator (a fat burner) Well…..that was April and I am now 2 pant sizes smaller than I was then. Now…this will sound more like a sales pitch than anything but I’m telling you, nothing else worked for me until I found these. It is manufactured by a company called Health 4 Wealth. If you’d like to investigate a little further, feel free to visit thinnerstrength.com. go to the “health” side of the page and read to your hearts content.  The wealth side will tell you about a home based business opportunity but you DO NOT have to join the company to order the products. I am a huge skeptic when it comes to “wonder pills” but I have my older kids on the vitamins and minerals, my husband and I take those and the Zylene (the fat burner) and we haven’t been sick in such a long time. There have been viruses and bugs going around all around us and we just don’t catch them. I also changed the way i cook and the way we eat. I do as much fresh produce as possible, keep the carbs and sugars low, drink lots of water, and stay as active as I can. I feel better at 41 (in a few days) than I did at 25 and I’m still consistently losing weight. No kidding! The cleanse some of the ladies have mentioned in their comments is also a terrific thing to do for yourself. If you can get the junk flushed out, you just absorb the good stuff that much better. I didn’t get into the products or the company because, I don’t like to be “sold stuff” so you can look into that on your own. I joined to save money, I take it because it feels great to know my family is healthy. Good luck with whatever you try!

        • I’ve tried everything from Slim Fast to cleansing diets, all had short term benefits, but were difficult to maintain over time.  Weight Watchers is the only thing that has helped me, truly.  It’s a lot different than it used to be, sure keeping a points journal is the best way, but there is also a core plan.  I very seldom prepare something to take with me.  Why, I can make good choices that I’ve learned from my leader and the materials given to me, also the dining out guide is great.  There really isn’t a secret, except eating a well balanced, nutritional meal and exercising.  You should always consult with your doctor before starting any exercise or diet plan.  My doctor recommendd Weight Watchers.  35 pounds and counting!

          Good luck!

        • Wow!  You girls know your stuff. Great advice!  I'm a little over 5 ft and weight in at about 146 lbs so I'm also looking to lose a few pounds too!  This is my story of weight loss frustration:  I  moved to a new house the end of June and have been "exercising" by lifting, bending, reaching, etc. as well as climbing up and down a flight of stairs from our basement to the living area.  (The laundry room is also down stairs).  I've steam cleaned the carpets myself, cleaned windows, painted, helped a friend move, and kept up the yard work with a push mower -all the while working a full time job.  I ate about the same as I usually do but get this --- after 2 months of contsant calorie burning activities I only lost a couple of pounds!  That's 2 months of constant moving and sweating and five times the exercise I normaly got while living in my 1 BR house with nothing but grass cutting as exercise!  I just don't get it!!  I was thinking my weight would drop like melting butter.  Any ideas??   Also, anyone ahd experience with the Atkins diet???

        • If you scroll up a few comments, it tells my frustrating story as well as what I found that works. Also, trudyb has a product that is capable of jump starting your system to accept the changes you seem to be ready for. I was never a “natural” person until I hit the brick wall with my weight and started trying to figure out why I was stuck. Check out the information on the websites and decide for yourself. I know I am thrilled with the decision I made and doing a good cleansing just leaves you feeling rejuvenated. I think it’s time for me to do it again, just to stay on track for a healthy body. Good luck! If you have any questions, just ask. If I don’t know, I’ll tell you and then I’ll find out.

        • Thank you cindyb!  Your story was very helpful and it’s nice to know someone else out there is having problems shedding pounds.  I’ll check out trudyb because a jump start would be great at this point! I went to the Health 4 Wealth website you mentioned but I was a little shocked by the prices. It might be difficult to fit into my budget right now. Thank you so much!

Also, for those of you on Weight Watchers, It’s a great program and I always lost weight with them. I just didn’t have the money to rejoin. I know for a fact it works if you stick with it and it’s a great program.  Once you get used to the program you will be able to  estimate your portions almost to perfection without having to reference everything you eat.  A trick I learned was to lable the food container with the point vaule of things I ate often in order to save time looking them up. Hang in there!

        • I swear by Weight Watchers too. No foods are forbidden! It’s mainly about portion control. Measure your food and look at the packages for what the serving size really is. It’s A LOT less than you think! I’ve lost nearly 15 pounds since the beginning on July. Not too slow, but not too fast either. You don’t want to lose muscle, that helps burn calories. It comes down to “eat less and exercise more” and to add to that, for some of us we just need to eat A LOT LESS. Read the backs of the boxes, cartons, jars and cans GIRLS!

        • I was on weight watchers for years, counting my points, exercising, etc. It never really worked for me although it worked wonders for my friends. I always stayed in my points and I had modest weight loss, but I didn’t realize until recently that most of my points came from fat and I didn’t eat enough protein.

I recently found a website called www.sparkpeople.com. It’s free and it offers great advice on how to lose weight, articles on staying motivated, nutrition, advice on fitness, etc. I’ve lost over 12 pounds doing this.

I’m also starting to transition to clean eating – which means cutting out processed food, eating lean meats, etc. This will take some time but I think it will be worth it.

          Annie

I do Zumba, dance fitness, now because I find the gym so boring. I think you can buy the dvd online. (I would check on Amazon or EBay first….save some $$) Zumba is an awesome workout! Latino music & moves.

I wear a heart rate monitor and the least amount of calories I have burnt is 550 (thats a lazy day for me) the most topped 1,000 calories! Let me know if you try it! I am hooked. Now I just need to break up with the darn ice cream and keep dropping the weight.

        • Your thyroid IS the reason for your weight gain! Anti-depressants also make you gain a significant amout of weight.

I have thyroid disease and am currently on a hormone therapy to suppress the enlargement and inflamation in the remaining portion of my thyroid gland. Being prescribed the correct dosage and the right thyroid medication makes all the difference in the world. The medical community seems to favor Synthroid, which in fact contributed to my significant weight gain. My current doctor, a D.O., started me on Thyrolar. Armour Thyroid is a natural thyroid hormone which is currently in short supply according to the manufacturer. The Endocrinologists all go along with Synthroid. One of the reasons why Synthroid doesn’t work is because the majority of doctors prescribe way too low of a dose.

I hope this information is helpful. As for exercise, cardio is all right, but to burn fat and maintain healthy bones, strenghth training is what you need. An example of this would be to invest in a Bow Flex home gym.

        • I gained about 15 pounds 4 years ago and have now just decided to take some of it off. Today is my first official dieting day. I enjoyed the weight for awhile because I have always been too skinny but I swear it is all settling in my stomach now! I don’t have much of a butt so when my stomach is getting bigger than it, I know it’s time to diet! I usually hike 4 miles a day but in the summer in Phoenix it is just too darn hot so I have been majorly slacking off on the exercise. I don’t follow any particular diet, I just lessen the amount I eat in my meals, stop snacking in between meals, and somewhat watch what kind of food I am eating. I do not want to torture myself by counting every calorie or fat gram that goes into my body. I know I need to stop eating once my stomach feels full and not keep going because it tastes so good! So we will see what happens when I make these little changes. I also will be able to get out and hike every morning again soon, it is starting to cool off a bit in the mornings.

        • Sweetnsassy asked if anyone tried the Atkins diet…I did in my late 30’s and it worked great for me..as a matter of fact…I should have stayed with it actually..but I didn’t and now I’m back on it. You start of the first 2 weeks eating basically no carbs…no fruit, bread or pasta, potatoes, sugar..you’ll start losing weight even without exercise..but exercise will definitely make it work faster..besides..you should exercise anyway. At some point you can slowly introduce carbs back in..the book will describe what carbs and how. Then when you’ve reached your ideal weight…you keep up with how many carbs your body can handle ..so if you start gaining weight again..you know you’ve gone over your carb limit. Read the book though..I’ve only given you a brief summary of how it works. This actually works for me..it seemed pretty easy to manage (just stick with it…a lifestyle definitely) Good luck!

        • A friend of mine went on the Atkins diet and fainted twice while on it. I know it works fast but it may wreak havoc on your body. Especially if you stay on it long term:

Does the Atkins diet have any side effects?

Unpleasant side effects can occur with the Atkins diet. To start with, burning fat results in the production of substances called ketones as your body enters a state called ketosis. This can result in bad breath, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, insomnia and nausea. Constipation may also occur as a consequence of avoiding typically high-fibre foods such as fruit, veg, beans, wholewheat pasta, brown rice, wholegrain breakfast cereals and jacket potatoes.

When it comes to long-term side effects, many health professionals are concerned that the Atkins diet may have serious dangers. While the high intake of fat, particularly saturates, may increase the risk of heart disease, there are also concerns that the unbalanced nature of the Atkins diet may lead to nutritional deficiencies, which cause health problems in later life. For example, poor intakes of bone-building calcium (found in dairy products) may increase the risk of osteoporosis, while poor intakes of antioxidant nutrients (found in fruit and veg) have been linked with a host of health problems ranging from heart disease and cancer to premature ageing and cataracts. Some experts are also worried that high intakes of protein may cause kidney problems or weaken bones.
