Purchase a domain name

My web guy recommended gandi.net. He says that it’s not expensive and it’s easier than some of the others when you want to move your domain name around.

Wow, that’s a good price. I have a friend who uses them and also there’s another member of this site, mamaj, who uses them.  

Sounds like a good idea for one stop shopping

I used yahoo.com to purchase my domain name.  Price was $9.99 for the first year.  I believe they charge me $19.99 per year after the first.  If you keep an eye out though, I often see domains listed for only $1.99 on yahoo.  

Also, somebody mentioned vistaprint.com.  I’m not familiar w/ them for purchasing domains, but if any of you need printed advertising to market your business, they are amazing!  Order from them once, and you will be added to their mailing list where they send weekly (if not more) specials out for FREE products.  They will often list up to about 10 products for free, and you can order one of each item being offered.  Then you only pay for shipping.

I will order 250 business cards, 100 postcards, 50 oversized postcards, 25 brochures, 10 notecards, a little memo pad _{all for free} then pay somewhere in the range of $15-24 to ship it to me.  The quality is very nice, very professional looking and you can't beat that price for all that marketing material.  

So thought I’d share Also, pick the slowest shipping option (cheapest).  They try to scare you by saying it could take up to 21 days (or something like that) but I usually get my package w/in a week – 10 days.  So in my opinion, not worth paying the higher shipping for faster service.  

Everybody on my team uses vistaprint.  They really are great.

Wondering where you plan to put your blog. I’m still in the early stages of mine. I in the process of creating another blog to link to my current one for the purpose of selling my chocolates.

I love VistaPrint for my new ventures before I go to a printer and Blogger too.

You can buy the name on Godaddy, and that’s it, take your website building somewhere else. That’s what I did.

Try hostgator for hosting…they are pretty good and affordable as well.

There is such a person who can help you with your baby steps (unfortunately he is here in Australia) but he runs a company online called www.alive.com.au – there is an articles section that has some good ‘baby’ steps.  I went to his 3 day seminar on how to get onto Google’s front page in 48 hours – pretty awesome information considering it wasn’t using adwords but SEO, social networking etc.  I am still working through the information to set up myself – I may start a blog about the ‘baby steps’ I am taking using his information if you are interested

The avatar is one of those ‘awesome life experiences’ – it was taken when I visited the Tiger Temple in Thailand.  Highly recommended – and yes the tigers are as big as they look (HUGE!) and not chained!  They are cared for by the monks who have built a sanctuary for them and take care of them.

It can be a bit confusing with wordpress because there are two wordpress sites (as if this web2.0 wasn’t confusing enough).  

Wordpress.com – you can’t transfer your blog  

Wordpress.org – you can and you can do better plug-ins to make it rate higher (SEO’s etc) and adding things like aweber to squeeze peoples names and emails to build your lists.

I’m so excited! My web guy just left. I had purchased a domain name and couldn’t figure out how to point it to my blog. Well, he worked his magic and then told me it would probably take a couple of days to work but it did it immediately. Now my blog can be accessed by typing

So he also set up a gmail account for me to receive and send mail with my custom domain. cynthia@cynthiaschmidt.com

I created a new blog to play with adding a paypal button and it worked like a charm. I bought a box of chocolates from myself! Not that I actually have the inventory right now but since I’m my only customer at the moment, customer service won’t be a problem.

Next he will integrate the two blogs so my blog and my chocolate sales are in one place!

This stuff is amazing. The internet makes it so easy to start a small business.

I see that synthasite offers free hosting, which godaddy does, too, if you purchase your domain from them.

I’ve just shot an email off to my best friend, who is a former web designer. She had mentioned to me before that she pays about $40 in hosting a month, but gets unlimited subdomains and unlimited email accounts, too.

I would really like to know how synthasite works for you. I’m currently cramming as much html information into my head as I can so I can build my own site and spend the $$ I would pay a designer on hosting, instead. I just don’t like many of the included templates and artwork that some of the freebies offer. I have a relatively clear vision in my head, but none of the freebie templates come close.

I do plan on digging deeper into synthasite to see what they have to offer. Thanks for the suggestions!

My friend (who I consider to be my expert-advisor) responded to me and suggested http://www.dreamhost.com/ if you‘re considering a paid hosting service. She’s been with them for over 7 years, and has been so happy with their service that she’s not even shopped around to see if they are the cheapest, although they were at the time she signed up.

She’s also suggested Dreamweaver w/Fireworks or good ol’ Photoshop for design and development, if you‘re planning on stepping outside of the freebie templates and images.

I am a web designer and I have all my websites on lunarpages.com. I don’t get kick backs from them but I recommend them lots because they just have been great to work with as well as great prices, space, and bandwidth. Right now they are offering a special of 4.95 a month (pay for 1 year).  They offer a free domain name with their hosting. They have a database that has wordpress on it so you can upload that to your site to use for blogging.

Great information, Darby! I’ve never heard of lunarpages.com, but I’ll be sure to check them out. I’m printing out the plans so I can do a side-by-side comparison. It’s all very important to me so I’m really trying to make an educated choice.

Actually Darby, lunarpages.com worked out great for me!  I bought my domain name through lunarpages.com and the website is created through Synthasite.  The website is up, but some of my pages are ‘under construction‘.  I’ve got this spring show in Dec/Jan, another show is Nov 2009, client obligations, and trying to create for my website.  Whew!  One tired girl. :)  But, happy!!!

I am going to make a suggestion that you can keep the words under construction but before them – you put a little blurb about what is going to come to that page. The reason being google searches for the first 150 characters of each page of your site so it will capture the under construction and then not put you into google. So I would say something like “Coming soon boys and girls clothing.” And then maybe a description of what you do.
