Researching where to purchase a domain name. Some feedback suggested GoDaddy.com. The prices are good!
What I am leary about is, what if I want to use that domain name on another web-site builder?...and, not GoDaddy?
I am building the web pages on Synthasite.com.
Just curious? Any one have suggestions?
My web guy recommended gandi.net. He says that it’s not expensive and it’s easier than some of the others when you want to move your domain name around.
Personally, I use vistaprint.com They have several domain hosting price plans and the 1st month is free. after the first 30 days is over, the plan you chose is billed to your card. I think the cheapest one is $9.00 a month(?) or something like that. The only thing you need to know is, if you decide not to stay with them and you’ve chosen a domain name that you‘re fond of, they will retain ownership of the name unless you purchase it (before the 30 day trial period is up)from them for a one time fee of $19.95
Wow, that’s a good price. I have a friend who uses them and also there’s another member of this site, mamaj, who uses them.
Sounds like a good idea for one stop shopping
I am currently using GoDaddy … And while the price is nice — it is not a service I would recommend. I am considering changing to Network Solutions. It comes highly recommended and looks good so far!
Thank you all, ladies! I will check out your recommendations.
Much success and love, to you all!
I use godaddy for domain name only. I am trying to decide what to do as far a building my own website. Currently I am just masking and using canned ones.
I have a cousin who is a computer geek that I thought was going to joint venture with me, but I can’t get him to get off the pot. I am clueless about all the web 2.0 marketing, but I know that is the ticket to successful internet marketing. Are there folks out there just connecting facebook, myspace, blogspot sites together that don’t have their own sites.
All the ‘helps’ I have found online are teaching affiliate marketing, which gets my goat. None of them are selling a product – they are selling ‘knowledge’ – basically teaching you how to sell ‘knowledge‘.
There was one site builder thing I found, and I can’t remember the name of it. It will come to me. It costs $300 -and guaranteed that you’d be in the top percentage of search results, but it seemed like they chose the less searched words for you to use.
It is overwhelming! I just wish I could find someone who would joint venture with me. I would do the marketing/contacting leads, etc. and build a business for someone if they would build the site and maintain it.
Anybody have a list of baby steps – start to finish – how to develop an internet presence, drive the traffic, and keep it coming?
Thanks!
Sharing Hope,
Dee Dee
Dee Dee,
I know someone who can set-up your website, etc. Please check out the attached link of his work and the website he built.

I am leaning towards gandi.net (thanks, chocolatier) or vistaprint (thanks dell58). I really like vistaprint! They offer a lot of services at good prices (for starving artists)!
I’m still checking out domains.com.
I will keep everyone posted on this journey.
I used yahoo.com to purchase my domain name. Price was $9.99 for the first year. I believe they charge me $19.99 per year after the first. If you keep an eye out though, I often see domains listed for only $1.99 on yahoo.
Also, somebody mentioned vistaprint.com. I’m not familiar w/ them for purchasing domains, but if any of you need printed advertising to market your business, they are amazing! Order from them once, and you will be added to their mailing list where they send weekly (if not more) specials out for FREE products. They will often list up to about 10 products for free, and you can order one of each item being offered. Then you only pay for shipping.
I will order 250 business cards, 100 postcards, 50 oversized postcards, 25 brochures, 10 notecards, a little memo pad all for free then pay somewhere in the range of $15-24 to ship it to me. The quality is very nice, very professional looking and you can't beat that price for all that marketing material.
So thought I’d share
Also, pick the slowest shipping option (cheapest). They try to scare you by saying it could take up to 21 days (or something like that) but I usually get my package w/in a week – 10 days. So in my opinion, not worth paying the higher shipping for faster service.
Everybody on my team uses vistaprint. They really are great.
If you want a weekly special emailed to you, let me know and I’ll be happy to forward one on to you. My email is becclynn621@yahoo.com
Make it a great day
I’ve used godaddy and had GREAT luck. I just purchased another one and am moving my blog out of Blogger once I get thru the other 200 things on my list!

Hi Cheryl
Wondering where you plan to put your blog. I’m still in the early stages of mine. I in the process of creating another blog to link to my current one for the purpose of selling my chocolates.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Cynthia
I just created a post on Blogger! I think I’m going to go with Google on purchasing a domain name. I also Twitter.
I love VistaPrint for my new ventures before I go to a printer and Blogger too.
I’ve done some sort of magic that enables everyone to reach my blogspot blog by typing in my domain name. I found the instructions in the blogspot help files, and it worked like a charm.
I eventually plan to actually develop my website and blog there exclusively. I’m considering network solutions, too. They come highly recommended to me by my best friend (former professional web designer) and my brother (current braniac computer guru).

You can buy the name on Godaddy, and that’s it, take your website building somewhere else. That’s what I did.
I forgot to mention that I bought my domain name on godaddy too. Cheap and easy. And I paid for several years in advance, which offers savings.

If you start a blog in Blogger you can’t move it – best to start it in Wordpress.org because you own the domain name and can move your blog to anywhere you like without losing your subscriber list…really important if you are blogging for business.
There is such a person who can help you with your baby steps (unfortunately he is here in Australia) but he runs a company online called www.alive.com.au – there is an articles section that has some good ‘baby’ steps. I went to his 3 day seminar on how to get onto Google’s front page in 48 hours – pretty awesome information considering it wasn’t using adwords but SEO, social networking etc. I am still working through the information to set up myself – I may start a blog about the ‘baby steps’ I am taking using his information if you are interested
I am very interested Maeveleda – and interested in hearing the story about your avatar. :)
Okay, I’ll get to work on it plus it will keep me focused, so thank you!
The avatar is one of those ‘awesome life experiences’ – it was taken when I visited the Tiger Temple in Thailand. Highly recommended – and yes the tigers are as big as they look (HUGE!) and not chained! They are cared for by the monks who have built a sanctuary for them and take care of them.
I will do Vistaprint for biz cards, car magnets, etc. A friend of mine blogs on WordPress also. Good rep!
It can be a bit confusing with wordpress because there are two wordpress sites (as if this web2.0 wasn’t confusing enough).
Wordpress.com – you can’t transfer your blog
Wordpress.org – you can and you can do better plug-ins to make it rate higher (SEO’s etc) and adding things like aweber to squeeze peoples names and emails to build your lists.
Thanks for the info maeveleda! I am on Wordpress.com. I will have to change to .org.
I’m so excited! My web guy just left. I had purchased a domain name and couldn’t figure out how to point it to my blog. Well, he worked his magic and then told me it would probably take a couple of days to work but it did it immediately. Now my blog can be accessed by typing
cynthiaschmidt.com
So he also set up a gmail account for me to receive and send mail with my custom domain. cynthia@cynthiaschmidt.com
I created a new blog to play with adding a paypal button and it worked like a charm. I bought a box of chocolates from myself! Not that I actually have the inventory right now but since I’m my only customer at the moment, customer service won’t be a problem.
Next he will integrate the two blogs so my blog and my chocolate sales are in one place!
This stuff is amazing. The internet makes it so easy to start a small business.
“...and the decision is….Synthasite to build the site and GoDaddy to purchase the domain name. Also, Wall Street Journal gave these two sites a good rating for someone working on a small budget. Synthasite and GoDaddy.
However, for all other marketing I will use VistaPrint. I am setting up a blog on WordPress.org and WordPress.com. Already have a blog on Blogger.com.
I see that synthasite offers free hosting, which godaddy does, too, if you purchase your domain from them.
I’ve just shot an email off to my best friend, who is a former web designer. She had mentioned to me before that she pays about $40 in hosting a month, but gets unlimited subdomains and unlimited email accounts, too.
I would really like to know how synthasite works for you. I’m currently cramming as much html information into my head as I can so I can build my own site and spend the $$ I would pay a designer on hosting, instead. I just don’t like many of the included templates and artwork that some of the freebies offer. I have a relatively clear vision in my head, but none of the freebie templates come close.
I do plan on digging deeper into synthasite to see what they have to offer. Thanks for the suggestions!

I feel the same, regarding the templates. I have a specific vision myself. I found a few (2) that is acceptable for now. However, you can change the banner image which is good. So that leaves a lot more room for creativity.
My friend (who I consider to be my expert-advisor) responded to me and suggested http://www.dreamhost.com/ if you‘re considering a paid hosting service. She’s been with them for over 7 years, and has been so happy with their service that she’s not even shopped around to see if they are the cheapest, although they were at the time she signed up.
She’s also suggested Dreamweaver w/Fireworks or good ol’ Photoshop for design and development, if you‘re planning on stepping outside of the freebie templates and images.

I am a web designer and I have all my websites on lunarpages.com. I don’t get kick backs from them but I recommend them lots because they just have been great to work with as well as great prices, space, and bandwidth. Right now they are offering a special of 4.95 a month (pay for 1 year). They offer a free domain name with their hosting. They have a database that has wordpress on it so you can upload that to your site to use for blogging.
I do have a bad story about godaddy.com—I was looking for a domain darbyart.com and I put that in there one day to see if it was available. Two days later I decided I was going to purchase it and it wasn’t available. Someone else had bought it. From what I found out they have their list of what domains are searched for easily available so someone bought that domain and squatted on it. They had an email on it so that if someone wanted to buy it from them they could. I decided to wait it out. I went and looked and saw they only registered it for 6 months so decided I would wait and see if I could grab it back. Luckily I could and did just that. Well I should say my love Michael did – it was my valentine present – I am in love with geek what can I say. :)
Anyway, it always my recommendation that if you look for a domain be prepared to buy it then.
Oh and by the way this was before my hosting offered a free domain with their hosting that is why I went through godaddy. As soon as my hosting started offering domains I switched to them immediately as I have had such good luck with them.
Great information, Darby! I’ve never heard of lunarpages.com, but I’ll be sure to check them out. I’m printing out the plans so I can do a side-by-side comparison. It’s all very important to me so I’m really trying to make an educated choice.
My husband is in love with a geek, too! ;)

Actually Darby, lunarpages.com worked out great for me! I bought my domain name through lunarpages.com and the website is created through Synthasite. The website is up, but some of my pages are ‘under construction‘. I’ve got this spring show in Dec/Jan, another show is Nov 2009, client obligations, and trying to create for my website. Whew! One tired girl. :) But, happy!!!
Okay, ya'll just keep me posted. I renewed my domain name with godaddy. I let it expire hoping to purchase it somewhere else but it was still tied up although it was saying unavailable when I typed it in. Now I just need to find a place to host, and build my site. Wish it was as simple as it sounds! No time to learn html, no discretionary funds to pay someone to custom design, and I don't like template sites either. sigh
Dee Dee
Sewdiva yay! I am glad you got the website! Congrats!
I am going to make a suggestion that you can keep the words under construction but before them – you put a little blurb about what is going to come to that page. The reason being google searches for the first 150 characters of each page of your site so it will capture the under construction and then not put you into google. So I would say something like “Coming soon boys and girls clothing.” And then maybe a description of what you do.
