HELP!!! I cant seem to stay out of the kitchen after 4 pm…..it’s so easy during the day. I don’t have the excuse of “little kids in the kitchen” anymore, but somehow, my hands just keep finding that cereal box/pretzel bag/etc etc etc!!!
Any ideas????
Do you eat enough during the day prior to 4? If I don’t eat enoughf for breakfast and lunch I’m ravenous just prior to dinner time. My husband often skips breakfast and lunch and when he gets home at 4, he literally stands in front of the open refrigerator eating leftovers.
I have a trigger time of day, it’s 3:00. No matter what I’m doing I still get these cravings to eat at this time. I’ve started arming myself with healthy proportioned snack items. Lately I’ve been taking a large wedge of watermelon or canteloupe, removing myself from the kitchen and sitting with it in front of the television for 20 minutes. This strategy seems to be working and the relexation time with my snack sets me up to go into the kitchen and start preparing dinner.
I hope this helps!

Try breaking your meals up into 5–6 meals smaller meals a day with the two main meals being breakfast and lunch.
Make sure you are eating a combination protein, veg. and whole grains. for breakfast and lunch and dinner. The other two meals should be small snacks in between the main meals…maybe fruits, veggies, protein shake, etc… Try to make your last snack no later than 6 or 7 o‘clock.
Drink water and tea during the day and when you find yourself craving do something else. Get up and walk, dance (one of my favorites…see my blog In Case Of Emergencies), clean the house, go blog about it. Whatever it takes for about 10 mins.
I usually find that my cravings usually don’t last long…maybe 10–15 mins.
It’s a little hard at first to push passed them but give it a try.
Good luck!
Where do you do your snacking? While watching TV? At the computer? Keep a healthy snack nearby. Think “the later, the lighter“, the later it is the lighter the snack. I was doing really good at this until my hubby came home with several 1 lb boxes of Russell Stover chocolates! ARGH! I’m limiting myself to 2. But sometimes I have three! RAR!
Haha! Thought I’d better clarify, that’s 2 chocolates, not 2 boxes! lol! oh my! None of ya’ll thought that, did you? ;o)
Coachmombabe, I just want to say I laughed so hard I cried. I have a bad habit I like to snack after Dinner. I am really trying hard to eat healthy snacks. I love fruit and almonds. I love almond milk, it is so yummy. I have been really careful to not eat after Seven. I am doing really well.
Hey there leeann6107,
I decided today that I was going to cut dairy from my diet for a month to see if it would have a positive effect on my skin. I think I have hormonal breakouts and was wondering if the hormones in milk are causing it as well.
Anyway, you mentioned you like almond milk…I’ve never tried it. Have you ever tried it over cereal and how is it?
Almond milk is absolutely yummy! I used to make it all the time. Here’s a recipe I just found in a raw food cookbook.
5 cups filtered water (distilled is nice)
1 cup raw almonds that have been soaked in water a couple of hours.
1 1/2 Tb. vanilla
1/8 tsp salt
combine everything in a blender process until smooth, strain and enjoy.
even my husband likes this!
Thanks chocolatier,
I’ll have to try it. I don’t drink that much milk really just over my cereal and then I only use skim fat free. I’ve used soy in the past but I stopped drinking that because I read somewhere that it’s not very good for people with thyroid disorders.
Almond milk sounds like a good alternative to cows milk, I’ll give it a try.
I’ll have to ditto the 5–6 small meals. If you are eating right until 4 and then go snack crazy it may be a habit (after school snack time maybe?) My suggestion is plan to exercise at that time instead of head to the kitchen. If you plan ahead you don’t have to be in supper prep mood at that time. Crock pot, or prepare ahead and refrigerate until time to cook. Go for a walk, spending time outside is best if possible.
For me the only route to self control is not to have junkies in the house. If it isnt’ there, I can’t eat it. LOL
A healthy snack – a handful of nuts and a piece of fruit would be a good substitute. We are creatures of habit though so it is best to replace a bad habit with a good one if you want to conquer it.
Sharing Hope,
Dee Dee
