The good news for Democrats, such as myself, is that Senator Obama has surged ahead of Senator McCain in the national polls and within several crucial swing states. The bad news is that Obama has backed into the lead on the heels of a financial crisis, rather than taking charge. The polls began to move in Obama’s favor as the Wall Street crisis truly entered the national consciousness. Voters are blaming the Bush Administration for the crisis and, therefore, leaning Democrat.
I want voters to lean Democrat AND to choose Obama based on his strengths. But, he must demonstrate leadership to earn the latter. Mr. Obama has been short on answers to the Wall Street meltdown and short on the kind of bipartisan consensus-building that he claims as his forte. He has played it safe. He is allowing the situation to develop without putting his foot in his mouth or taking a false step. This may be smart politics six weeks from Election Day, but it is not courageous and bold leadership.
In truth, the Wall Street collapse is the fault of many from Main Street to Wall Street to the Halls of Congress to the Oval Office, including Democratic leaders in Washington. Senator McCain did in fact call for reform of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae two years ago. Representative Barney Frank and Senator Chuck Schumer did oppose taking legislative steps to reign in subprime lending. This history should not be distorted by Democrats for political purposes – that is not the way forward. All parties must accept their share of culpability for the current crisis – then a bipartisan solution can be reached.
Fly above politics, Mr. Obama. The nation needs leadership as a lame duck president falters in his waning months in office. And, a dose of bold leadership now would be good politics too.
I laughed when I read the title of this blog just now. Just moments ago I was flipping through the channels and heard Obama yell out “we need leadership!” at a rally in Philadelphia.
Please show us some! Was my thought as I went ahead and turned of the TV and walked away.

Neither canidate has the answers. We as a whole are all accountable and responsible for the current situations and events we find our country in today. When we begin to look inward and acknowledge how we’ve played a role in creating our current situation as a collective force then and only then can divine inspiration be given and recieved in rectifying the issues and challenges at hand. The blame game must stop and as a nation we must become unified.
I believe no matter what is said about Obama he is ready and would do an amazing job as President of The United States of America.

I’m tired of all of them. I wish they would all stop pointing fingers and complaining and someone would do something somewhere.
...and while I’m at it, what’s up with Congress? Can anyone tell me why it’s ok for them to take 5–6 weeks off in the middle of one of our country’s pivotal moments in history? No one else in America gets as much time off as Congress.

I see what the two of our candidates are doing as a metaphor for what we do as a human race, we point our fingers at one another and fight to be RIGHT at whatever the cost. I feel they are a mirror for where our society standards are currently. If we see an area we dislike in them ( our candidates) within our current jobs, relationships, and other social networks we must be open to shifting that within ourselves. Nothing in life shows up without reason usually it is there to assist us in making changes within ourselves. I say process every negative with a positive, it works.
To be honest…I see nothing positive with Obama….sorry guys…but I don’t. Believe me….I certainly wish I did. In fact…..I have never been more terrified for my country….than I am right now. Just my opinion.
Obama = change
I think many are afraid of that. IMHO, we need it!

MZTRACY: You are right. Obama = Change. But, the question is what kind of change. Change for the sake of change is not the answer. We want positive change. I am a Democrat. I have voted Democratic since Jimmy Carter ran against Ronald Reagan. I am very unsettled by Mr. Obama. My fears are twofold: (1) our economic situation as a nation requires job creation and investment in new industries – these goals are not furthered by Obama’s proposed mix of income tax increases, tax increases on risk capital formation through capital gains and dividends tax hikes, business tax increases in the form of enhanced payroll tax exposure or new “pay or play” health care taxes, etc. – we need to enegize new business creation in a global marketplace that makes our costs of domestic production expensive in comparison to off-shoring industrial and even services activity; (2) the instability in the world today as America weakens economically is quite real, and we need a sure hand guidijng foreign policy – Obama has no depth of experience in this area and it has shown up on the campaign trail – Senator Biden’s “gaffe” happens to sound about right to me. So, I find this all very hard this year. I think that Mr. Obama is extremely talented, and thoroughly untested. Mr. McCain is quite tested. Headaches!!
Well I dont believe in pushing my politics on anyone but I do appreciate hearing what everyone thinks politically and why as it does help to see a situation fron all sides, and read all opinions.
Sara Thank you for sharing your point of view. Im glad your committed to your convictions, just as others are in both political camps.

Absolutely. I don’t feel this a waste of time at all as is stated by others on other blogs. I have learned so much and continue to learn. So please share you thoughts, opinions, fears, and hopes. None of us has all the answers, but we can learn from each other.

The change I am hoping for is for the majority of people like me… the middle class. Healthcare is a huge concern of mine since being dx‘ed with MS in 1997. Since then our ins costs have changed yearly…gone up. Being that most of the ‘friends’ of the govt are not regulated and can basically do whatever, whenever they want…ie; raising rates that are already too high. As someone who lives it, it is a fact. Right now our house taxes have come in. Funny thing is our house is worth 20,000 less than when we bought it. Last year it was worth 100,000 more. Yet our taxes are the highest they have ever been?! So, we are going to the office, filling out the forms, and getting them reduced. What the heck???
OK, just realized I’m now rambling. lol sorry

I used to always vote Democratic, but this year I am very undecided. I really don’t care for either one, but yet they both have good ideas. I think that instead of bailing out their friends they should give it back to the American People and let us pay off our own debts.
I am not undecided, my vote already went in. Whether or not it is counted is another post!! lol
But, ljblondie, I agree totally with you on the bail out. The people that caused it are the ones being bailed out. So many people were mislead in those awful arm loans, that when the rates went up, they could not pay and walked. And you know darn well the peoplee giving these knew it would happen. They know more about your finances then you do. lol

Everyone is guilty in the mortgage crisis, not just one side. There are many people that got greedy, including some of the home purchasers who bought homes they can never otherwise afford. You always have to pay! ..and I’m not talking about basic housing. I’m talking about people that should have bought homes for one price and spent double to get mini-mansions that they otherwise could never afford.
Incidentally, 93% of homeowners pay their mortgage bills on time. What’s happened in the economy is much much larger and much more complicated than this.
The bigger question I have is that if the government can come up with this amount of money, this quickly, why can’t they pay off our debt, why can’t they fix social security, why do they always want to raise taxes?

Well from what I understand This government paper is really not worth anything. These mortgages should have never been offered to people whose credit scores were bad.
“I’ll keep my freedom, my guns, and my money, you can keep THE CHANGE.”
It’s not just the mortgage companies fault…it’s the people who purchased them as well. You know when you are spending more than you take in….PLUS…the majority of this nation is covered in credit card debt. If you were to look at the majority of Americans…you would see major credit card debt. Plus…people who DON‘T own homes…more than likely have major credit card debt as well. So….let’s address that. Some of those folks with mortgages that can’t pay…probably could have paid the mortgage if they didn’t have the credit card debt. Not saying all are that way…but I bet you there is a lot.
Why isn’t anyone addressing how the majority of our congress is made up of lawyers? Lawyers look after lawyers. Okay…why do you have so many lawyers on television these days..encouraging people to sue others???? Think about it….okay…then…why do you think mal-practice insurance has gone out of the roof? Why do you think so many doctors are getting out of the business…are not delivering babies anymore?? Why??? I can tell you why….they can’t afford the mal-practice insurance that has gone over the top…we have lawyers on tv encouraging you to sue for stuff that really is out of a doctor’s control. Okay…so what do you think the dr. does with your bill????? The bill he sends back to the insurance companies?? He increases his charges just so he can break even or get something for his services.
So you see folks….it’s not just about the insurance companies and providing coverage or not…..their charges…it’s about who is out there encouraging people to sue doctors for absolutely stupid stuff. Now..I do realize there are bad doctors out there…but…you need to take a good look at this problem as well.
It’s not all about the mortgages…..it’s time for people to take responsibility for themselves as well. It’s time to start looking at other problems that are contributing to the big one. That’s my two cents…
Mary –
I agree. You can’t blame everyone else all the time. There are some people that were duped into buying mortgages they should never have been able to buy. Others were just greedy and bought houses they could never afford with no money down, etc.
The economy is so much more complicated than the (thats right only 7) of people who can’t pay their mortgage.
Also, you nailed it about the lawsuits. Who pays for the greed of people suing?? Us!!! It all comes back to us. Now it's true that some people need to sue in order to pay for their medical bills... but greed is something different entirely.
If everyone would stop being so greedy and live within their means and stop trying to impress everyone or keep up with the Jones’ we’d be in much better economic shape.
That’s my two cents.

I agree with both Mary & Annie!! It is sad, though, as I know of 2 couples who have lost their houses due to lay offs.
