  • Drowning in Paper

      I drives me crazy how quickly the paper piles up in my home. Do you keep your bills after you pay them? How long do you keep copies of stuff?

      I’m tired of keeping things…just in case.

      Help!

        • I know I may be a bit obsessive about bill saving…but I only keep bills and receipt of payment for a year….then toss/shred.  I file them in a file drawer, so I can easily access them.  I do this only because I have been biten by the “You have to prove you paid” bug by our gas company, way too many times.  We ended up having to pay another deposit, even after I proved we did with a cancelled check.

          I hate all the paper too!  When I get my mail, I go straight to the garbage can and eliminate all the ads and junk mail, sheredding all the credit card and loan offers.  This has helped quite a bit.  Now, if I could just get my hubby to do the same.

          I don’t even want to talk about all the paper that comes home in my kid’s (I have five) backpacks….we are swimming in it…and the look on my littlest one’s face when you go toward the garbage with her most recent stack of “A’s“...they must be saved for at least a week or more.

          I’m feeling your paper challenge…I am drowning in paper too!

        • “swimming in a sea of paperwork” is how I used to describe it at work when it got overwhelming.  I’ve been to one of the websites where you can opt out of catalogs – that cut way down on the stuff that gets delivered but I still get my fair share – and so I stand at the recycling bin on my way in from the mailbox and just unload the junk.  My husband is the one who’s meticulous about shredding certain things and he’s had his identity stolen twice since the summer!  not that shredding’s a bad thing, I’m just saying…
          With the school stuff – that’s a hard one..but there’s so much that i miss things and then I feel like a bad parent because my kid didn’t do his math homework, sheesh!
          I don’t keep most bills because I can view a lot of them online.  I also bank online and have access to copies of my checks on line as well as my bank statement- so that helps.  I have some things filed but just as much waiting to be filed.  It’s nuts – I feel like it would take me months to get totally organized around the entire house – months of working on it full time that is.
